Why is everyone married?
Marriage, in its deepest sense, is not merely a social or biological arrangement—it is a reflection of the cosmic principle of unity and duality coexisting in perfect harmony. Every aspect of existence is an interplay between the dynamic and the still, the expressive and the receptive, the manifest and the unmanifest. This is why we see divine pairs in nearly every loka—Shiva and Shakti, Vishnu and Lakshmi, Brahma and Saraswati—representing the sacred balance between complementary forces that together form the whole.
On a spiritual level, marriage symbolizes the union of opposites, mirroring the journey of the soul toward completeness. The ultimate realization in Advaita is that there was never any separation to begin with, yet in the play (*Leela*) of existence, duality arises. This duality is seen in the cosmic dance of masculine and feminine energies, which, when harmonized, bring about not just worldly fulfillment but also spiritual awakening. The presence of a committed partnership can serve as a path of *sadhana*, where both individuals refine themselves through love, patience, sacrifice, and understanding.
Even Ishwara manifests as divine couples because creation itself is a dance of interplay between consciousness (*Purusha*) and energy (*Prakriti*). Without this dynamic balance, existence would remain static and lifeless. The relationship between these forces is not one of mere companionship but of deep interconnectedness, where each supports the other in maintaining cosmic order (*Dharma*). This principle is mirrored in human relationships, where the highest form of marriage is not just about personal happiness but about growing together in wisdom, service, and spiritual realization.
The spiritual benefits of marriage are many. It provides an opportunity to dissolve the ego by placing another's well-being before one's own. It becomes a living meditation, teaching patience, devotion, and selflessness. It also acts as a container for energies that, when aligned, can propel both partners toward higher consciousness. In Tantra and other mystical traditions, marriage is seen as a sacred union that mirrors the inner marriage of Shiva (pure awareness) and Shakti (dynamic energy) within oneself.
Even in worlds beyond Earth, the principle remains the same. Whether among Asuras, Rishis, or Devas, the presence of consorts signifies that creation is never solitary—it is always a dance of unity and diversity. The beings in higher realms may not experience marriage in the same way as humans, but the fundamental truth remains: wholeness is realized through the recognition of one’s inseparable connection with another.
Ultimately, whether through marriage or solitude, the highest purpose of life is to awaken to the ever-present truth of oneness. Marriage, when approached with awareness, becomes a path—not just to love another, but to transcend the illusion of separateness itself. -
