IMO, Gandhi was assasinated by the right kind of person at the right kind of moment in Indian history.


If he lived longer, we would have looked at him as a religious nutcase.

If he died earlier, India might have been different. Nehru's worst impulses might have reigned.

If he died due to disease, he wouldn't have the glory of a martyr.

If he was assasinated by another community or caste, demonisation would have been really bad. Instead, his death at the hands of a Hindu nationalist bramin shaped post-independence narratives in a specific way, reinforcing the idea that Hindu extremism was a major internal threat.
