Another gut-feeling measure I use is the perceived impact of your work. Your people need to have the freedom to innovate, do things differently, and drive impact. If they/you are stuck too long on tasks that will not drive impact, something is wrong. It pays off to give freedom and responsibility to others if the outcome is impactful.
