I got married without dowry but yes it very much still is. As soon as the alliance got fixed, the family "elder" sat down with my dad and asked him how much sovereigns we're taking from my in laws. Made me think. This guy has a son who is not too older than me. I don't want to say for sure but I assume he took dowry from his son's in laws.

I think the general philosophy is that if the girl has a job and is going to earn then you don't need to take dowry. Also if the girl is entitled to a share in ancestral property then also dowry is generally not taken.

For the son it's inheritance and for the daughter it's either inheritance or dowry.

During our alliance I insisted we don't ask or take dowry. In the district and surrounding areas where my in laws live, generally people only leave the ancestral property to the son and don't give anything to the daughter because she would have gotten dowry. Some people in my family were concerned that we won't get dowry also and when the time to bequeath comes, my FIL would leave everything/most of everything to my BIL and we "lose out" on both fronts. I personally didn't marry for wealth so I don't care either way.
