I believe this myth originates from a time when medical resources were limited, and society expected pregnant women to be cared for by their maternal families. In the modern day context, OP, if you/ your folks are confident that you should be able to provide the same level of care to both the ladies in this situation, and are totally okay with having more than one newborn around the same time (if, that is a part of that agreement at all), I don't see why this should be an issue altogether.
