Ugly is a thriller film, written and directed by Anurag Kashyap. It stars Rahul Bhat, Ronit Roy, Tejaswini Kolhapure, Vineet Kumar Singh, Surveen Chawla, Siddhanth Kapoor and Girish Kulkarni in pivotal roles. The film is about how the daughter of a struggling actor goes missing, and the subsequent investigation into the same.

Anurag had conceptualized the idea of Ugly in 2006. He believed that the film could only be released after he gains immense success as a filmmaker, due to the dark and intense nature of the same, and Gangs Of Wasseypur allowed him to do the same.

The core of the film was developed from his broken marriage with Aarti Bajaj (who also edited Ugly) and his relationship with his daughter Aaliyah Kashyap. The guilt he felt from not spending enough time with Aaliyah due to being an alcoholic shaped up the film. The first ten minutes of the film stem from his personal experiences as well.

The logic behind kidnapping cases and the decisions made by the characters in the film were derived from conversations that Anurag had with Amit Pathak, who was the head of the Special Task Force in Lucknow. He had integrated real life facts and scenarios in the film, such as the fact that 85% of kidnapping/missing cases are vendetta based abductions, as well as the case of brutality that the wife of an IAF officer had filed against him. A lot of scenes were improvised as well, to depict police apathy and the methods they use to interrogate suspects. One of those scenes actually had Vineet being slapped 50 times, as well as having him handcuffed to the ceiling, in order to depict interrogative methods that implemented third degree torture.

Rahul was cast in the film as Anurag felt he would resonate with the character, who is a failed actor. To prepare for his character, Rahul drank alcohol heavily and deprived himself of sleep. Anshika Srivastava portrays the daughter who goes missing in the film. Anurag had requested Anshika's parents to not show her the film as she was too young for the film's subject

The cast of the film had not read the script before shooting, something that Anurag felt was necessary. The first time they got to know what the film was about, was when it premiered in the Director's Fortnight section at 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it received a standing ovation.

Upon release, Ugly received widespread critical acclaim, with some critics dubbing it as Anurag's best film and one of the best Indian thrillers ever made. Made with a budget of 4.5 crores, it made 6.24 crores at the box office, becoming a modest commercial success.

At the 60th Filmfare Awards, Ugly was nominated for Best Story (Anurag Kashyap), Best Editing (Aarti Bajaj), Best Screenplay (Anurag Kashyap, Akhilesh Jaiswal, Rohit Pandey), Best Sound Design (Mandar Kulkarni) and Best Director (Anurag Kashyap). However, it did not win any of the same.
