I have a 4 TB NVMe in a usb 3.0 case, and usb limits the speed to about 900MB/sec. Booting from that drive works fine, no bottlenecks slowing things down noticeably.

Also a 1TB SATA ssd in a similar case which is limited to about 500MB/sec by the SATA bus and it’s a little slower but still runs fine.

Same machine booting from a 64GB flash thumb drive that only runs 120MB/sec, the machine runs slooooow.
