They may seem real to an individual if they are fully devoted to Bhakti, but ultimately they are simply expressions of the one ultimate reality, and that is Brahman. Of whom with attributes you choose to worship is more or less irrelevant. If Shiva is your preferred to worship or meditate on, then so be it. You can just as well worship Jesus or Freyja, Zeus or Tsukuyomi.
