Getting married is a new identity you're adding to your already present list of identities. As we go through life we take on a lot of identities - son, brother, friend, colleague, husband, father and the list goes on and on. Its not limited to our relationships, our jobs also become a part of our identities, and that does effectively change who we are with time. It's not surprising that your friend is different than who was before he got married. Maybe his wife's friends are saying the same thing to her too.

That being said, romantic relationships do tend to change some people more drastically (so many factors cause this, won't bother listing them) because they give up a more than noticeable chunk of their individuality for the relationship to thrive. That's where co-dependency and unhealthy attachment comes into play. This is so common that its hard to differentiate the healthy and unhealthy sometimes even years into the relationship. That's my two cents on it.
