In an ideal world I'd want a 3 bike garage. A highway tourer, a sports bike for track / weekend rides, and a commuter. But realistically I'd like to own two bikes. One for highway touring and track, one for commuting.

I agree with all the points you mentioned. Another one I'd like to add is regardless of how powerful, and exciting a bike is you'd get used to it which means you'll start eyeing for an upgrade. I don't want that. Commuting on your commuter will make you appreciate the other bikes more. Not just the power but even small things.
