First common sensical thing to do would be to ignore and walk out in a crowded public area, assuming you're not out in a lonely place at 2 am in the night. Crowd provides a shield, usually.
If there are no people around, it's better to ignore and keep moving.
If they keep chasing you despite the fact that you’re not engaging with them, chances are they won't have a change of heart with conversation either. So I'd be on a lookout for something to use as a weapon. A log, rod, brick etc. Anything solid which can crack some bones.

Hopefully it never comes to this but if it does, it's better to turn around and immediately stand face to face against them with a threatening stance that you might attack anytime. Don't pick it up and keep moving like before. Turn around and don't speak anything. Don't respond to anything they say. Just hold your position and mimic their movement. If they come closer, you move closer.

Actually fighting them off looks good in movies, but not real life. Therefore psychological domination is the only solution possible.
The prospect that there's no communication makes it psychologically unnerving to think that things could go wrong. Plus your willingness to approach them is another factor.

You should pursue it .At least give it a try or else you will have a life long regret. Success is tough but the attempt is more fruitful. I left my job in the US and came back for it, haven't made much progress yet, but keeping at it is important. Good luck!
