**Warning: long story**

**The problem statement: my failure in IIT**

I got a year log in IIT.

22 years ago, I was studying in architecture department. This prof used to teach design. Because he was a bully and would humiliate people, I was constantly scared of him.

He found his prey in me. He ensured that he would humiliate me every day (we had design 2 days a week, on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons). As a result, I could not sleep on Monday, Tuesday, and often Wednesdays and Thursdays too, so that I could finish the work and show it to him so that I would escape his taunts and humiliations.

His modus operandi was, supposing that you chose a circle, he would ask, "Why did you choose a circle? Why not square? rectangle? Triangle? Hexagon? Pentagon? This is bad design! blah blah..." while staring you in your eyes, sitting at your desk in the studio, while the whole class would be a scared spectator.

Next time, if you made a square, then he would shift goal post as to why not circle, triangle, etc, etc. So, he was never satisfied.

Lack of sleep and pressure gave me epilepsy. when my parents came to pacify him, he got angry and almost yelled at them that "This guy complaints about me to you!! I will show him!!!".

At the end of the year, he failed me by 4 marks, and because of this, I lost a year. I was in third year, and I would have to repeat that year. architecture is a 5 year course.

Apparently, being a failure, my chances of landing a good job was bleak and career was doomed for first few years.

**Solution:**

I was devastated and suicidal, as I had never ever failed, forget year log.

I decided to not pursue architecture as my career. What would I do then? I knew I was good in math and also, I had been exposed to batch program, GWBASIC and C programming since I was 8 years old.

I thought of trying out Civil department as it was closest to architecture. I thought of trying Finite Element Method as career option, but the professor laughed at my face and almost threw me out of his cabin as he thought I was a loser for failing and how would I be able to manage to study his subject.

Writing was my hobby, so I decided to pursue where the math, writing, and programming converged- which was computer science.

There was this professor from Math department who knew my flair in math. He himself was an AIR 3 in his time, and a passout from IIT Kanpur. He helped me in that tough time to come out of depression. In return, I helped him prepare for his course lectures in class, and I would attend his classes too. Sometimes, he would give me chance to take some lectures too.

This boosted my confidence, and I went to CSE department, where the profs were amused. They found a guy who wanted to attend their lectures, when people were bunking classes! Interestingly, my thought process seemed interesting to them, and since I was mostly free, they often discussed things with me. This gave me their unique perspective which they would often skip during the class due to time crunch.

They taught me Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning and similar courses, which made me what I am today.

I wanted to do masters from IIT, but because my CGPA was 0.02 lower than the cut off, the then director Damodar Acharya rejected my application. Apparently, the whole CSE dept and other committees stood by me, but still, I gained the knowledge.

I then moved to some company in 2009, and slowly, with hard work, I reached here (which, IMO is not that great), in EY, as an Assistant Director in AI.

**Epilogue:**

*I visited IIT recently with my wife, and I was told that one of the profs from the CSE dept become the Director, and he, citing my example made some fundamental changes: Now, people could do more than 1 major. There was no minimum CGPA bar on doing majors, and there was also no bound on the number of subjects one could study.*

*While I could not do much on my own, but I am glad I was made an example of.*

**Future Plan:**

*The math prof who was AIR 3, I plan to go on his retirement, and hope that I start a scholarship with his name for AI students.*

*That day, I plan to drive him through whole of IIT in my BMW, and pick his things, and take him to the airport. There would be a business class booked for him to Delhi, where I will pick him up again and drive him to his home in NCR in BMW again with all the pomp and fanfare that his career deserves, so that the other profs feel proud on what they gained by teaching us kids, and they keeping on helping the needy and downtrodden like me.*

Ask the owner(softly) if there is any written instruction from the local police specifically preventing consumption of alcohol. If he doesn't show any, you can assume that there is no such thing. 



Be responsible if there is swimming pool in the property, it may turn fatal for someone who is heavily intoxicated.
