Christians, especially Syrian Christians of Kerala (Nasranis) have migrated fastest by a large large margin.

Pathanamthitta, Kottayam have a large concentration of Syrian Christians/Nasranis.

They started western immigration back in 1960s. They started going to bigger Indian cities and even Gulf at the same time.

They have the lowest propensity to come back to Kerala.

No other community can come close.

1. Kerala had 25% + Christians during Independence. Now it's hardly 18%. The amount of Syrian Christians has reduced drastically.

Because immigration was easier for them.

2. Christians in Kerala became nurses (women) which opened up doors in almost all western countries in 1960s. At that time even IITians struggled to go abroad. Lot of doctors, pharmacist and other skilled medical courses were also dominated by Christians.

Western world wanted millions of nurses. The demand was fulfilled by Filipino (Philippines) and Kerala nurses. Even Gulf countries.

Upper caste hindus didn't permit women to go to Nursing because as a nurse you have to deal with Blood and Human Waste. Many thought it's undignified. Christians didn't have much problem, for them it was a practical decision to more prosperity.

Hindus (Brahmins and Nairs) who went to US, Canada in the 1970s were not only very few. They were also elite. Because no middle class people could easily make it abroad in west at that time this easily.

Christians even lot of poor went to West in 1970s using Nursing Wifes and English skills and permanently settled there.

3. Also Christian men studied skill courses. They didn't focus much on IIT or elite courses. They went for Btech, Engineering Diploma from 1970s onwards which gave them easy access to the Gulf Job market.

From Gulf countries - most Hindus returned back. But Christians mostly used gulf as a stepping stone to western world.

4. Just imagine that there are around 100+ Kerala Christian churches just in New York, USA. So you can imagine the strength abroad.

Also this has had bad consequences for community within Kerala -

Very less political power within Kerala due to reducing population.

Many Christian strongholds has MLAs. Because of population loss the constituency itself was eliminated. Eg. Malapally.

Many Christian areas like Pathanamthitta, Kottayam are basically full of large empty homes.

Many Christian sects like Knanaya, Marthomma, Orthodox are facing stress as thier home churches in Kerala has hardly any youth.

ALSO - Strong Christian Belts have declining property prices -

For eg. Pala, Ranny and Malapally and many other parts of Kottayam Pathanamthitta had 40% collapse in real estate prices when prices across kerala increased.

Now Christian NRIs are struggling to sell of homes in Kerala as there is no demand.

5. One additional factor which helped is English: Most Christians studied in Convent schools where English was mandatory. English is one major advantage as it could easily propel you abaord.

Also almost always - when a Nair goes abroad he and his family goes abroad. Christians almost always sponsor thier cousins and extended families abroad. Making it a massive chain migration.

6. Kerala Christians didn't migrate just to Western Countries and Gulf. You could see lakhs of them in Indian Cities like Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai.

BUT not every Christian community is equally affected.

2 sects where almost washed out of Kerala by immigration - (1) Knanaya Christians (2) Syrian Christian Marthomma Church.

Marthomma churches back in Kerala depend on foreign funds because local church doesn't have any wealthy income generating members. Almost all of them are abroad.

These communities literally don't have any youngsters in thier church.

Now (1) Syrian Christian Catholic (2) Syrian Christian Orthodox & Jacobite are also affected.

Latin Catholic & CSI youth have also started migrating in the last decade.

Difference is that even the poorest Christians could easily go abroad because of Nursing + English + Family chain migration.

But now it's affecting them very badly.

And now there are calls from Christian Churches in Kerala to stop this migration.
