To be fair to OP, this scene does make you very uncomfortable. But, to be fair to Mani Ratnam, this scene is highly intentional. The movie is layered with allegories. It's far from a typical SRK romantic film.

Without spoiling much, the movie is about the ancient arabic theme of 7 shades of love. And the backdrop of Assam insurgency highlights the tragedy of love within and without.

Also, the production quality is really good for a 1998 film. Give it a shot.
