I'm a 20 year old so take my opinion (based of off my experiences) with a block of salt.

The things OP has done when he noticed the creta braking is impeccable and nothing short of quick thinking.
But the reason he had to move to middle of road was he was generally carrying way too much speed when the two lanes are occupied and traffic was kinda sorta slowing down.
Best practice imo is to always and I mean ALWAYS be aware of traffic around you not only front but sides and behind.

TL;DR
Maintain sufficient distance according to your vehicle's braking capability and then add a bit more to account for your potential reflex delay.
Always try to be aware of what is going on around you and be attentive at what is happening past the cars in front of you.
