I think one factor is that a lot of backward groups like illegal Bangladeshis, UPites and Biharis have settled here in Assam. Their women usually aren't allowed to work and most of the time too busy in child rearing. This brings down the total percentage.

Even newly settled Rajasthanis here are like that. They might be a comparatively wealthy group in here but definitely not progressive towards their women. Also, they try to marry off their daughters as soon as they finish their degrees.

To answer your question in way that makes the most sense, I will start with this.

First things first, India has no national language but 22 official languages. Which means that Tamil is as equally important as Hindi is and so are the other 20. So when someone (let it be the central government or the people from the northern states) gives importance and the ignores the rest then that shouldn't be well take by the people speaking those other languages.

Unfortunately we are the only one who strongly voices out against it.

Regarding your argument about English, It provides far greater benefits than any of the other language. English is considered to be an international language, with which you basically can communicate with the whole world. That's not the case with hindi. So, definitely I will choose English over Hindi, I mean I call this being smart.

Moreover, why need a third language at all in the first place. Learning three languages along side math, science, social science, etc, is a huge pain in the ass. Why would any instill such a burden on the students. Academically, math and science are the most important things that students of our country should be given priority.

So, Everyone can learn English (like i mentioned it's internationally beneficial) and the regional language of that state. That's it. Isn't simple? I makes life easier for everyone. Also, we are not against anyone learning the language in Tamil Nadu. If we had to travel up north for work or any other reason, we are adapting to speak hindi. Likewise, when people who travel south, do the same thing. **That is how migration works-you adapt to your surroundings.**

So all our rage against Hindi, is only because it's being forcefully imposed on us.
