Omg of course. Why do you think admissions success rates for normal people are so low? Because most of the seats are ‘sold’ to rich, well connected people. I personally know idiot kids of industrialists who went to ivy leagues because their families donated libraries and theatres.

Btw, the universities don’t see this as diluting quality. They are maximising the opportunities for their students. It means that the normal kids who do get admitted get to network with people like this, and that will hugely benefit them in the future. They carefully curate their admissions to get a good mix of talented/hardworking and well connected/rich people. You can get a good education anywhere, but the USP of these universities is the network/brand they provide. Also, the money from ‘selling seats’ means they can provide state of the art facilities and scholarships. Same reason why big universities admit movie actors and distinguished people e.g. Natalie Portman, Malala Yousoufzai. Meanwhile, the ‘rich kids’ meet intelligent/hardworking kids and also get a fancy degree that increases their brand.

Remember that higher education is usually just a signal of your worth/quality. It’s not about learning per se. Think of IITians who go into finance or politics. IIT just signals to the market that they are clever and can do most things well.
