The hate for a common language in a vastly diverse country just drives the point home that the "diversity" part is just on the outside. Maybe inside, we're not as diverse and inclusive as we like to show.
And someone in the comments mentioned, why can't "Northies" learn the Southern languages as the Southies have to do when they travel to the North.
Firstly, Northern India has much more linguistic diversity. The state of Bihar alone has 100+ different variations of Bihari language and trust me, even Biharis speaking one dialect don't know the other, have trouble understanding.
Secondly, again, driving my point home, maybe a common language for all the people to communicate in, is not that bad of an idea. Try to keep the politics out of language maybe. It's just a necessity to communicate in a foreign land and it's nice to have people understand you.

Note: Learning a new language isn't so easy, especially for older people.
