We are DINK, I am a female, and it was my decision not to have kids after seeing all my friends struggle in their marriage once the kids were in the picture. I did a pros and cons,there were too many cons and just a handful of pros.The most important aspect of my decision of no kids was I wanted to break the cycle of kids-school-college-work-marriage and all the expenses associated with it which meant we have to work until we retire and still keep spending on them until we feel they have settled coz in a parent's eyes a kid is always a kid which meant we wouldn't have enough money when we retired and wouldn't want to have any expectations from kids to take care of us in our old age.

Long story short, on the contrary, now, with no kids, we can retire any time and anywhere.We now have the liberty to travel anywhere anytime. We have already visited more than 15 countries and counting. Taking care of our health and well-being, which shows on me and my husband as we don't look our age. Splurge on us and our families with gifts all the time, not just on special occasions.

Having said that, I am not against people having kids, and I never give my opinion about our decision of not having kids unless I am asked about my opinion. As a society, we have been made to believe that this is how society should work, may be it should, I am not completely denying it. No one thinks outside of it. It was for our own mental health, too, that we decided to go against the tide. Earlier when our parents had kids it was with an unsaid expectation that we will look after them in their old age which we are already but the generation now can't be expected to do that which to think of now is unfair to them.

People who are profs/ teachers are respected a lot in Bengali society esp in Kolkata.

Plus Kolkata's cost of living is still quite low compared to most other cities of India and basic amenities and rent in good houses aren't that expensive.
