If you know what type of business / product you want to have/create then find a customer you know would need it and get them to agree to test it and try to at least get a tiny amount of $ from them when you deliver (or before you deliver it, etc. But, it'll give some inspiration and teach you about contracts/making a deal happen).

If it's more of a burning desire to build product X, go for it. Just don't do it full-time. Do it nights/weekends around any part-time or full-time job and put everything you have into it in terms of passion. And never look back. You'll get some good experience either path you choose.
