Not to dampen any one's spirits here, but as per Mahabharat isn't it Svetaketu who instituted the system of marriage in India? Before that men and women seemed to have lived together in an enlightened arrangement!

As for the God's and Goddesses all having spouses, that is indebted to the first and the greatest secular philosophy in the world, the Samkhya system of thought. Gopinath Kaviraj is said to have stated that it is the whole of Indian philosophy as per Gerald Larson's report. That may be true too.To me it seems that even Advaita Vedanta is 99 percent Samkhya with some embellishments like Mayavada etc.

Anyway this Samkhyan concept of the dualistic nature of being (of consciousness and matter) is later famously expressed by Shankarachaarya in the opening verses of Soundarya Lahari

Shivah Shaktya yukto yadi bhavati Shaktah prabhavitum
Na chedevam devo na khalu kushalah spanditumapi |
Soundarya Lahari 1 ( first two lines)

It means: Shiva becomes capable of creating the universe only when he is with his power, the shakti, if not, he can't even move.

The Samkhyan thought was so original and path breaking and unsurpassable that, none has been able to build anything in India without resorting to it in the later times. Everything else was just applying newer paint on the walls and rearrangement of the furniture within the fort.

In reality the only way we can make sense of the world living here, is the Samkhyan way, of there being two, the consciousness and matter, prakriti and purusha, Shiva and Parvati, Adam and Eve.
