As a North Indian tired of seeing hate between us, I’d like know from South Indians themselves whats wrong? And how to make it right?
No matter where we are from in India, we need to realize a few things:
* India is a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-religious country. Every part of India is just as Indian as every other part. There is no "normative" Indian culture. An Indian Muslim is just as Indian as an Indian Hindu or Sikh. While we should celebrate our cultures, we have to be aware of this diversity amongst us.
* We need to be aware that we may not all belong to other places in India to the same extent that we might belong to ours. We are all part of a civilizational complex consisting of many sub-nationalities. A Punjabi in Andhra Pradesh or a Tamilian in Gujarat is to some extent in someone else's house. So we need to accord to each other the consideration and respect that we might expect guests to accord to their hosts, and vice-versa.
* Every Indian deserves to be treated with dignity, no matter what his caste, ethnicity, or religion. The right to dignity of the individual is a core value enshrined in our constitution. If this value is not protected in India, we are violating a core Indian value that makes the country worth defending.
Most of the issues in India today can be traced to the right wing's drive to homogenize India based on linguistic and religious lines. This is not being done organically, based on the merits of the case, but as a act of cultural violence. Large sections of the population - perhaps the majority - resent this, and it's the greatest existential threat to India. -
This is disturbing 😳
