Tell your husband to have a chat with his mother about this. Nothing you wear or do will ever be good enough for her. Also, it seems like she wants to feel needed or that her opinion matters. Get her involved in a local cultural group that meets weekly. Have your husband drive her there if necessary. (Old people abroad get super bored and therefore crabby.) Once she's distracted by something else, she'll go after you less.
