As humans we think that lawful civilised behaviour is matter of birth and not learning. As if we weren't taught to not scratch our butts and pick our teeth with the same hand. When we see someone not complying with the same "manners" that we have, we think it's because that is a lesser person, and not that that person is unfortunate who did not have access to the same quality of education and culture that we did. In my previous job I lied. They all assumed I was studying something on the side, because why else would a 29 y.o work retail part time with a bunch of other young students? This couldn't possibly be *all* I do, right? So I lied and said I was studying for some government exam.

But I do remember that when I was younger I was more of a compulsive liar: I'd lie about random stuff to try and connect with people. I gradually stopped because remembering all the webs of lies I'd tell to different people was exhausting, I had a shit memory and getting caught in a lie was always embarassing as hell.

I also stopped giving a shit about connecting with anyone by my early 20s, so there's that.
