OP I largely agree with you but from experience, the protectionist policies haven't benefited us (consumers as well as the nation) as much as it should have.

I feel like this is another one of those things that, while well intended, just produces a bad outcome due to poor implementation.

We certainly need to protect our markets from being dumped on and against products that are cheap only because of government subsidies in the country of origin.

Where it hurts us is with the punitive nature of the tariffs for things we don't have an alternative to here. A lot of goods have parts sourced from multiple places. You can't manufacture a cheap final product if all the components have huge import taxes on them.

The way our import duties are, it's as if the government wants every single thing to be built here. Which is very foolish.

Imports of good quality products should be allowed with some restrictions to promote competition and assimilation of ideas / techniques.

I think the root of a lot of problems is that we as a society on average prioritizes the superficial things. (Appearances, status etc).

The appearance of solving a problem seems more important than actually solving it. Then because it's an appearance thing, you want the flashiest solution.

New designs take time to mature, there will be failures before it gets good. You can't let that get to your head. You can't be sensitive to design criticisms like it is a personal attack.

I've seen people be overly proud of someone's achievement as well as flip and treat them like an absolute loser at the smallest of failures.

Circling back to the import duties. To me, it appears like they want to be -seen- to be helping the local manufacturer by punitive taxes on import. Instead of actually getting a domain expert to optimize the whole process in a way that it actually boosts domestic production / innovation.
