First there are things called subreddits. They are named like r/xyz. Its more like a group based on a particular thing for example about XYZ in our case. People post and discuss it in those subreddits. Then there are channels in your DMs. Those are like group chats. You can try trivia, horoscopes, making friends, etc... People don't usually use reddit for chatting. But you can still dm to people on reddit. You can search for subreddits and join them if interested.
