As a member of diabetic family....
Type 2 diabetes is actually related to food. Since we all eat the same food at home, it is possible to develop diabetes coz we are eating same what our elders are eating. My whole family, including my grandfather, father, uncle, uncle's children, and my grandmother (Nani), has been affected. In fact, my father, uncle, and Nani were on insulin.
It's important to take precautions. If possible, consider buying a digital glucose monitor for your father so you can keep track of his sugar levels. If you can't buy that, at least get a portable glucose meter for home use; it will cost around ₹1500-₹2500.
Remember that carbohydrates can be more harmful than sugar itself, so try to limit carbs in meals like rice and roti. Opt for less oily food and maintain a balanced diet. Include protein and fiber in your meals; this is essential. Eating salad will provide fiber, which is best if you can have it with every meal. If that's not feasible, you can consider isabgol (psyllium husk), which is a fiber powder. Consult your doctor on how to take it—typically not more than a teaspoon in one glass of water. Be cautious, as taking too much can lead to constipation. Fiber helps prevent glucose spikes.
High blood sugar is a problem, but low blood sugar can be even more dangerous. Never neglect the signs(search in google what are the signs, most common is sweat) of low blood sugar; rush to the doctor if you notice them. Always keep Glucon-D at home for such situations, as patients may become unconscious. Avoid giving them sugary foods directly; instead, place Glucon-D on their tongue—it dissolves quickly that way.
As your doctor may have already advised, try to avoid starchy foods like pressure-cooked rice, cornstarch, sabudana (tapioca starch), potatoes etc.
