I'd definitely suggest reading Bhagavad Geeta, not only because it's a great summary of Hindu philosophy but it's also really easy to read & short. Make sure to read about the backstory of war first i.e why it's happening so you're hooked.
After that I suggest reading Vivekchudamani or maybe just Upanishads in general to understand Hindu philosophy.
There's also this youtube series called "Upanishad Ganga"

India had de facto joined the Soviet Sphere after the 1971 War and took steps to establish itself as a closed socialist economy. They even changed the constitution in 1976 to specifically include "socialist principles". Indira Gandhi was rumored to be compromised by Soviet intelligence.

By the time China opened in the late 70s & 80s, India found itself firmly allied with the Soviets to counter China. The idea of changing their whole economy to mirror China's couldn't work since China was exporting to the West while India couldn't realistically play both sides between the Soviet Union and the West.

Not to mention that such a massive change to the economic system would have growing pains to say the least. Ultimately the decision had to be forced by the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia-China rapprochement, & impending bankruptcy.
