It was absolutely disgusting in many ways during my visit. People there just don't seem to care about garbage. The roads outside the ghat areas are filthy to say the least, but the inner roads leading to the ghats somehow feel worse. The narrow lanes seem to accommodate cow dung, vehicles, animals, heaps of garbage and, tons of people walking by all of it and contributing to it with general apathy.

All the pomp of the Ganga aarti and the newly (& rather poorly) designed access to the main temple seem to be some grand show, a jarring experience if you are out to seek some spiritual connection amongst the chaos. Apart from the disappointment and disgust, it is heartbreaking to see the soul of the ancient city being stripped away.

One of the cleaner areas I found was around the Nepali temple, near Lalita Ghat. It was a pleasant surprise just wandering around the ghats and randomly coming across that serene place.

Google also has this similar feature which decently works, ducduckgo is one more browser you can use to see the tracking.
