He was, indeed, a megastar. Most of the films in the 60s with him in the lead minted crazy money at the box office.

As an actor, though, he was average at best. Even if we consider that melodramatic acting was the order of the day back then, other actors like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor etc.did it much better than him. They were also more expressive than him in comedy and romance.

One of the reasons why his films did well was the music. Its importance cannot be understated. Sasural, Humrahi, Suraj, Aarzoo, Jhuk Gaya Aasmaan ... all these films had excellent music. Their songs are popular even today.
