Sometimes, things move in one direction for a long time, and it’s hard to guess the highs or lows if you’re trading quickly in a single day. If you look back at the last two or three COT reports, you might find clues about where things were heading.

I learned this from a guy named [Bernd Skorupinski](https://youtu.be/lFHewMrjj0I?si=tZlPgFhYg-fLBjO9&t=117), and I like using COT data to understand Commercial traders more than big institutions or regular people trading.

* Commercial traders usually protect themselves from prices going down. It makes sense because there’s enough money in the market to balance out big buying spikes.
* Their trades seem more about waiting out the current trend until a new one starts.
* It’s like Commercial traders plan for the future, big speculators trade for today, and small traders react to old news.

I made a drawing to show how COT data and big news might look together. It’s inspired by the late 2024 WTI oil price spike, which started months after pagers started blowing up in Lebanon.
