It’s not my job to convince anyone on the internet, but here’s why I don’t follow Periyar. He blamed a small section of the population for the issues in society, and any ideology that pins the blame for an entire society’s backwardness on a small group is inherently flawed.

Now, let’s be realistic. Tamil Nadu might be a decently governed state, and we’re okay on most parameters, but there’s nothing exceptional about the state’s political culture. Kerala has better social indicators, and states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Delhi NCR / Haryana are on similar economic trajectories. On the flip side, India’s young working population, especially those in IT, don’t necessarily see Chennai as the go-to place for building a career. Make of that what you will. So, I’m not a big fan of the Dravidian model propaganda either. There is a great deal of philistinism that plagues Tamil society. We waste time on questions like, “Did Ramar go to engineering college?” or “Is Ravana Dravidian?” and get caught up in clichés like “Tamil is the oldest language?” or the Aryan Invasion theory, along with other forms of Tamil exceptionalism.

Here’s another thing: Periyar wasn’t exactly a widely popular figure during his time. His influence was mainly confined to parts of Madras, Kanchipuram, and the Cauvery Delta, where latent anti-Brahmin sentiments existed, partly due to absentee landlordism and Justice Party non-Brahmin castes feeling a loss of power during the days of Madras Presidency. Most of the propaganda we see about him today comes from Dravidian groups dominating the academic and media space. I don’t think Periyar’s legacy has been properly assessed by the larger sections of society.

The world isn’t black and white—it’s all shades of grey. I don’t think Periyar ever really understood that. Just my two cents.
