GOA LIBERATION
After India attained its Independence, a few pockets in the Konkan region called “Portuguese India” were among the last colonies in Asia. They included the areas of Goa, Daman, Silvassa, Diu, and Anjediva on the west coast of the Indian peninsula. India claimed the Portuguese territories by military means after the Salazar dictatorship of Portugal refused to leave.
The “armed action” was code-named Operation Vijay (meaning “Victory”) by the Indian Armed Forces. It involved air, sea, and land strikes over 40 hours, and was a decisive victory for India, ending 451 years of rule by Portuguese over its remaining enclaves in India. The engagement lasted two days, and twenty-two Indians and thirty Portuguese were killed in the fighting.
Goa, Daman, and Diu liberation is observed on 19th December every year. The Goa Liberation Day is celebrated in commemoration of the Indian armed forces freeing Portuguese-ruled Goa.
The spark was ignited in November 1961 when the Portuguese contingent based in Anjadiv Island fired at the Indian merchant ship Sabarmati to demonstrate its maritime superiority in the region. Thereafter, Portuguese garrisons began shooting indiscriminately at Indian fishing boats off Karwar and South Goa.
The overall engagement lasted for about fifty minutes. Concurrently, in the early hours of 18 Dec, Anjadiv Island was also stormed. In an act of perfidy, the Naval landing party, under the leadership of Lieutenant Arun Auditto, was duped by the display of a White flag of surrender by the Portuguese and then fired upon, causing seven deaths and wounding nineteen others. A memorial was later erected on Anjadiv Island to commemorate those who had made the supreme sacrifice.

HOW INDIAN NAVY HELPED IN THE LIBERATION OF GOA
On 18-19 December 1961, the Government of India executed Operation Vijay to liberate the Portuguese colonies in India. This was the first time in the history of independent India that all the services operated together, not taking into account the brief Op Peace in Junagadh just after Independence.
The Navy's operations off Goa were intended to secure access to Mormugao harbour, to neutralise the Portuguese frigate Afonso de Albuquerque, and to immobilize Portuguese Navy ships there to launch naval landing operations to take Anjadiv Island.
On the morning of 18 December, the Portuguese frigate Afonso de Albuquerque was anchored off Marmugao harbour. Besides seeking the Indian Navy ships in the area, she was tasked with preventing any Indian surface forces from entering the harbour and radio communication of Indian movements.
A naval task force was formed with Rear Admiral B.S. Soman, the then Flag Officer Commanding Indian Fleet (FOCIF) as the Naval Theatre Commander.
Based on a signal by the Navy Chief, Vice Admiral V.O. Katari which said “Capture me a Portuguese frigate please,” at around 8:00 hours on 18 December, the three Indian frigates – Betwa, Beas, and Cauvery – steamed into Mormugao harbour in line abreast formation, with Betwa leading. Betwa made repeated efforts to surrender in Morse code. In response, the Afonso fired shots, headed out while mingling with merchant ships anchored in the harbour and returned fire with its 4.7-inch guns.
The highlight of Operation Vijay was a 13-minute gun duel between the Portuguese man of war, Afonso de Albuquerque, and Betwa, Beas, and Cauvery.
Albuquerque was spotted, encircled, and ordered to surrender in three minutes. When Albuquerque did not comply and tried to hide behind a merchant vessel, Betwa and Cauvery fired. In the wake of a fierce gun battle, Albuquerque was hit and listing, turned towards the harbour and landed on the Dona Paula jetty. This was the end of the first gunfight.
All operations in Goa came to an end at 6:00 p.m. on 19 December 1961. The documents of surrender were signed by Portuguese Governor General Vassalo De Silva at 8:30 p.m. and Major General (later Lieutenant General) K.P. Candeth who was appointed as the Military Governor of Goa.
It took just 40 hours to end 450 years of Portugal's Asian empire.

Matt Gaetz: 'I probably partied, womanized, drank and smoked more than I should have'
The thing is, I honestly have no issues with partying, drinking, smoking, even womanizing (minus the illegal stuff he did with underaged girls obviously), but the Republican Party pretends to have this moral high ground about being the party of family values, and then has absolutely no problem with people like Matt Gaetz or Donald Trump in their ranks, and the GOP goes out of their way to defend and even celebrate them. The hypocrisy is what gets me. -

I had a job earlier where we sent out parcels on a regular basis. We always used either ST courier or Professional courier. We only used to send stuff within TN though. If time was not a constraint, we even used speed post. But we never went anywhere near DTDC or Bluedart. -
Staycation/ AirBnB near Kochi
This was a few years ago now (2021) but we rented out the entire place at OGs Tharavadu for about that much for a one night’s stay. We were a big group, 5-6 families. Food was extra of course. They have a pool and a big property so loud music at night wasn’t an issue at all. I don’t know if they have any activities. -
