In some ways, Bollywood and South Indian cinemas used to be less sexist. Yesteryear actresses like Padmini and Vyjayanthimala had great roles in many languages. Sridevi was great in movies like 16 Vayathinile and Khuda Gawah while Aishwarya Rai was great in Kandukondain Kandukondain and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. But of late all they seem to do is glorify the personality cults around the male leads. The Pushpa series is a good example of this. The story has no stakes because the hero is practically invincible. I like Pushpa but the hypermasculinity gets tiring very quickly. I love Rajinikanth movies (Muthu, Padayappa, etc.) but his movies seem to have set this trend which shows no sign of waning.
