Arnav is basically running away from the emotions Khushi invokes in him because he wants to stay away from emotions
Yes his love for his family exists but that is also a need based love where he feels responsible to keep them happy especially his sister to keep things in his control.
He doesn't like trusting anyone because he's been betrayed by everyone since childhood
His mother committed suicide and so did his father so I won't tell you the reason but isn't it traumatic for a child to realise that the mother found it easier to give up on life than Live for her kids.
This issue wasn't addressed in the show because they showed he loved his mother a lot but I guess that feeling of being abandoned is what shaped him into who he is.
He feels difficult to love and trust anyone other than his family. Also he doesn't want to give in to his love for Khushi because he felt he'd become weak like his mother.

Khushi also has her own trauma and hides it behind her Happy persona but she has to be responsible for her foster family where she's constantly reminded that she's an orphan.
