In the early days, the number one thing is definitely the ability to get things done without much involvement from management and detailed specifications. Beside the technical skills, this includes a strong drive to get things done, ability to take initiative, acting without all the data to make an informed decision, understanding the business and the users, and what actually delivers value, and planing your work accordingly.

Number two is flexibility and willingness to things that might be outside of your role when necessary. Priorities change a lot in startups, so you need to be able to pretty much drop what you are doing and focus your efforts on something very different with pretty much no notice at all. This is very hard for most developers and it often creates more work down the line, but the immediate demands is what typically makes a startup stay afloat. You might also need to things like network, do outreach, meeting investors, talking to customers, project management etc that is not part of a normal developer role.

Creativity and finding unorthodox solutions/hacks to solve problems without a lot of code and time investment. Most startups that tries to disrupt an industry will face many technical and regulatory challenges, and if you can find simple solutions to these problems you can create huge wins for the company. This can be what makes or breaks your startup.

Ability to take responsibility, grow and learn new things. As a developer in a small team you need to take responsibility and make sure that things progress without any managers that micro-mange you. As the startups grows, you need to take on more responsibilities and grow with that. You often need to learn as you go, and you need to be willing to dive into new challenges, both technical and non-technical with the right mindset and learn what you need to sole the problems at hand.
