In Disk Utility, you can go in the middle left and select view, and then select Show All Devies, then find your main external drive, like the highest one (make sure to not accidently chose the one for you mac). And then Erase and format this higher one to ExFAT again, it might of been a partitionning problem.

DO NOT SELECT MACINTOSH HD, This would erase your mac, select your External HD (but the highest one in the tree), example it would be Apple SSD for the mac's Internal drive
