Do you tip your barber?
I do, Rs 50 at Green Trends. Always cash and directly to the barber. I do not like paying the 18% GST on tips.
I've never felt that the tip was expected though.
There is no such thing as "tipping culture". Tips are voluntary in India. They have, and should have, nothing to do with the prices of the services. If Green Trends increases the prices further, I will choose to continue tipping for a good service.
For the record, I think Green Trends pricing for a basic haircut is still very good. Considering the time and skill involved, paying Rs 250 in 2025 seems very reasonable. If you don't want to pay that much, you could always go to a local barbershop or do what I did through the three years of the pandemic: cut your own hair.
Service sector employees in India are paid adequately. Tipping is fully optional. The only problem I see, is with "Service Charges" added to bills in restaurants. That is an unfortunate development because it makes menu pricing unnecessarily confusing. Just add the damn charges to the prices of the items and be done with it. Service is not optional (you won't allow me to go get my food from my kitchen and put the plates back in the sink), so why should the charge be an afterthought?
The USA is the only major country where pricing is adjusted with the expectation of a tip. That is a messed-up economy where salaries are suppressed with the expectation that the difference will be made-up through tips. We should be vary that **that** doesn't happen here (it is very unlikely; we are very cheap 😂).
Tangential: If nothing goes wrong, I also always rate my Uber Rides and Swiggy Delivery riders with 5 stars. If the food and service was as expected, I always rate restaurants with 5 stars on Google Maps. I try not to be cheap -
