Is the Indian middle class apathetic towards the issues of the poor? I have been noticing since some time that the Indian middle class barely shows any outrage for the issues of the poor. Most of the cases which grew into social media movements had victims belonging to the middle class. I recently learnt that more than 50,000 people in India lose their life due to snakebite, but nobody talks about it maybe cuz the victims are primarily poor rural people. However, they seemed unaware that Gujarat Govt under CM Modi had already prohibited the sale and distribution of gutka and pan masala since 2012. The sale, storage and distribution of gutka and tobacco or nicotine-laced paan masala are banned in the state. The ban came into effect in 2012 under the Food Safety and Standards Act and rules and regulations formulated in 2011.
