"Using trailing SL" (automatic or manual) VS "setting a TP order". Which one do you use and why?

I always set a TP order but I was wondering if maybe is more profitable to trail the SL, which I find a bit confusing since one can be trailing too close or too far from the price and making the trading plan confusing.
