Struggling with Index Bloat & SEO for My Multilingual Website – Need Advice!
I run a multilingual online gaming website with 10 different language versions, including English. The site structure is like: * **English:** website . com/ * **Spanish:** website . com/es/ * **French:** website . com/fr/ (and so on for other languages) I have **8k main pages**, but due to translations, the total indexed pages reach around **80k**. Many **category and tag pages** lack unique content—they only display game thumbnails under their respective categories/tags. Since each page has **10 alternate language URLs**, Google has to crawl a huge number of pages. **Problem:** * My site was **hit hard (70% traffic drop)** during the **October 2023 Helpful Content Update**. * I added **canonical tags** pointing to the English version to **reduce duplicate content issues and improve crawl budget**, but Google **still crawls non-English URLs** heavily. * Adding **noindex to non-English URLs** would completely remove them from search results, which means **losing valuable non-English traffic**. * It’s almost **impossible to manually find and noindex only low-value pages** due to the sheer number of URLs. Should I remove the multilingual feature completely on my website to reduce the number of pages and balance the crawling budget and will it help the website recover from the Google penalty? Would love to hear insights from others who’ve tackled **multilingual SEO challenges** and **index bloat issues**!5
