SEO Pros: What should I be thinking about in terms of quality perception?

I had a discussion with an SEO expert who was saying that I should make sure that my content is perceived as being high quality. Is that all about being unique and not duplicating or are there other gotchas to consider? I figure content is subjective and I'm still learning the ropes of SEO (just starting to pick up the craft).
