    Olive Ridley turtles mass nesting

The coast of Odisha is one of the largest nesting sites for Olive Ridley turtles, along with coasts of Mexico and Costa Rica. Between February and March the female turtles come ashore to lay eggs for 3-10 days. This unique mass nesting phenomenon is called Arribada. I stay roughly 130kms from this place but I've never had the opportunity to visit due to work commitments or some reason or the other. This year a few friends and I went to witness this rare phenomenon in person and we were equally awed and surprised/disheartened by what we saw. While most people were gently watching them, some delinquents were torturing them by throwing sand, or standing on top of them. We even saw one person pull a turtle out of its nesting hole. I wish I was ready to capture that but it all happened so fast and I couldn't. This kind of behaviour is absolutely unacceptable. These turtles are an endangered species and need to be protected at all costs. It is this kind of behaviour of some humans that makes me feel we don't deserve nature and its natural beauty. Conservation teams should work harder and employ trained personnel during nesting season to ensure such incidents are not repeated in the future and offenders are strictly punished if seen manhandling the turtles.
