• Harbour line shenanigans

Last Panvel-Goregaon train, ladies compartment. I found a seat next to two women with two toddlers. Sounds harmless, right? Wrong! The older woman was munching on groundnuts and throwing the peels on the floor (pic 1). At first, I tried to ignore it and just generally wanted to avoid confrontation. But it was getting on my nerves (and clothes, and shoes...). So, I politely offered her a packet to throw the peels into. With an awkward and slightly embarrassed smile she said, "Ab nahi khayenge" (we won't eat anymore). Yeah, sure, but what about the mess you've already made? Also, no one's stopping anyone from eating, just don't make a mess. Finally, I picked up the peels around our seat, and a few minutes later, they had the audacity to eat Rajnigandha and slyly throw the wrapper on the floor. I picked that up too, without making eye contact, because, honestly, I didn't want to give them the satisfaction. Aunty gave me an awkward smile and I just responded with a straight face. When the compartment got empty I discovered two more people in their group sitting on the opposite side seats. They also ate groundnuts and threw the peels on the floor (pic 2). I mean, at this point, I'm just wondering what pleasure do people get by throwing garbage around. I regret not picking up their mess too, but honestly, it wouldn't have made a difference to them. They'd just keep on littering and expecting others to clean up after them (or not). TL;DR - Entitled, or let's say, people lacking civics sense on the train throw groundnut peels everywhere, I pick up after them, and they just watch with awkward smiles.
