How to prevent damage caused by lighting in electronic devices?

hey guys, Is there a fool proof way to prevent any damage to electronics from lighting strikes? My parents say they have installed some earthing equipment that is buried under the house in a mixture of salt + coal. tbh I dont think they know exactly what the builders and electricians might have done for this. There have been instances where the neighboring houses have had damage to electronics when they left them plugged in even when they had all necessary protections. My parents dont leave any items plugged in during thunders and lightning strikes because they say that nothing can prevent it.
