Should Maharashtra Follow Tamil Nadu’s Lead in Dropping Surnames?
In Tamil Nadu, people began dropping their surnames during the Dravidian reform movement to weaken caste identities. By using only their first names or father’s names, they aimed to promote equality and move away from caste-based labels. Should Maharashtra consider doing the same? It’s true that casteism here isn’t as overt as in other states, but surnames still often reflect caste. Removing them could help reduce this association and create a more equal and homogeneous society. ***Of course, what truly matters is changing people’s mindsets. But could dropping surnames at least be a step forward, sending a message that caste identity should not define us?*** What do you think? Let's discuss.4
