Space not freed up after deleting files

I noticed this started to happen recently; when I run low on disk space on one of the hard drives, I move folders over to a new drive (and delete the folders on the old drive), yet there is no increase in free space. Why is that? How can I fix this? Running first aid doesn’t seem to make a difference, disk still checks out ok but I am still very low on space.
