Do I need free space on my Mac to copy to iCloud?

Hi, I'm trying to copy a sizeable amount of files from an external hard drive onto iCloud, and I'm being told that I don't have enough free space. I know that isn't true, I have loads of free space on my iCloud, so I wondered, does the Mac need to have that free space available to enable it to upload to iCloud? Thanks, Stew
