Carbon Copy Cloner insists APFS is best for backup drives - even spinning rust - but everywhere else seems to suggest HFS+, what to do??
Hi all, just invested in two new identical spinning rust drives to go alongside a couple of existing ones, for external storage and backup of that storage. I use Carbon Copy Cloner 7 for all such tasks and when I set these new drives up it's pretty insistent in recommending APFS, for the backup drive at least, claiming it's best for backups. I'm confused because everything I can find anywhere else says that APFS was designed for SSDs and isn't ideal for spinning drives. I gather APFS has some potential benefits over HFS+ (Mac OS Extended Journaled) in terms of storage efficiency for example. But that over time it's not the best choice for a spinning drive and that HFS+ is better as it was designed with them in mind. I tend to trust Carbon Copy Cloner, but I don't know what to do about this, would like to make the 'right' decision now and forget about it. For full info some of my drives will be accessed day to day (the extended storage drives), and their backups will be accessed once every day around midnight for incremental backups. I don't need my Mac backup to be bootable, and I don't need encryption. Just pretty vanilla access and backup purposes only.3
