Advice for SSD recovery/repair
I have a 1TB LaCie external SDD that formerly served as a Time Machine backup volume. After removing it from the Time Machine Settings menu list of available destinations, the device no longer mounts (macOS 15.3, MacBook Pro M1). It's visible in the device tree (at the Thunderbolt port where it's plugged in) via General->About->System Report, but does not show up with \`disktutil list\` in the Terminal or when using Disk Utility in regular or Recovery mode. When plugged in, the device's activity light goes on for several minutes before going solid. Possible confounding factors: The drive is connected via a Thunderbolt 2 cable with a USB-C Thunderbolt adapter. It worked previously with this cabling. I found this error in the Console app shows which may or may not be related but which makes sense given that the volume should be encrypted. /dev/rdisk4s2: Can't open /dev/rdisk4s2: Permission denied /dev/rdisk4s2: /dev/rdisk4s2: \*\* /dev/rdisk4s2 (NO WRITE) /dev/rdisk4s2: Executing fsck\_hfs (version hfs-677.81.4). QUICKCHECK ONLY; FILESYSTEM CLEAN /dev/rdisk4s2: fsck\_hfs completed at Thu Feb 6 06:08:28 2025 I've read that designating a volume as a Time Machine backup makes it not visible as a normal device, so it may be that the SSD is both hidden and password protected – not a great combination if so. Is there a way to just overwrite the disk to reformat it? A low-level tool like fsck maybe? I'd like to dispose of it without worrying that the data could be recovered somehow. That may be an unnecessary concern if the encryption is sound and there's always physical destruction as an option. But it seems there should be tool to access the drive, assuming it didn't physically fail.3
